HISTORY OF RYAN ARTS & THE AACOA:
Ryan Arts will serve as the host organization and has its origin in the outcome of the 1994 Sanders Consent Decree, which sought to address de facto discrimination in public housing throughout Allegheny County.

The mission of the Ryan Arts Center is to inspire, copower, and enlighten individuals through the arts. Our goals for the next year are to increase offering accessible/continual after-school programming for teens, integrating Sto-Rox library and literary arts into all Ryan Arts programming, emphasizing digital literacy for youth and adults, and creating a wellness programs for all ages focusing on nutrition and healthy living, with much of the programming consistently making connections to the layered multitude of social justice issues the Sto-Rox Community faces. Most importantly, it is Ryan Art’s overarching goal of growing sustained partnerships with like-visioned arts organizations.

Willie Dawson, visual artist, AACOA and community building Sto-Rox resident has volunteered on the AACOA committee since it’s inception in 2010 and is dedicated to not just honoring it’s legacy but growing it into something that is sustainable and makes real, tangible impact in the community. Dawson has been rallied around by the collective to be the leader in this work. He works full time as an interior design consultant at At Home in nearby Coraopolis, and has the goal of dedicating at least one day a week to coordinating, executing and measuring year long efforts if we can find a way to compensate him for his hours lost at At Home.

Some of the projects Dawson hopes to lead in addition to his yearly collaborating, marketing and hanging of one amazing visual arts shows from local artists in the Ryan Arts gallery, he’d like to make it more of community of Artists, where one or a group release new works with an event quarterly. Another idea he has pitched, that we are very excited about and got a lot of good feedback at our July 25th Community Conversation with 70+ Sto-Rox Residents in attendance, was harnessing his interior/exterior decor experience, working with the teens in our afterschool program on some various community beautification projects that would include local property owners and The arts community to improve visually depressed properties in our home town. “Random acts of artistic kindness,” he calls them, “We as artists and handy community members help our neighbors keep their property beautiful.”
