In this hands-on workshop we will explore how to use maker-centered learning in the early childhood classroom in order to create a culture of learning. Participants will use assorted open-ended materials as learners in order to explore Thinking Routines and documentation and then unpack how to use these concepts as facilitators of their own students’ learning. We will discuss the characteristics of making that are already present in students and how to use them to deepen their discoveries. Participants will learn how to introduce, explore and extend ideas using Thinking Routines. We will engage with open-ended materials and loose parts, discovering ways such play can provide the basis for investigation and deepen children’s understanding.
